Unfelt Threshold is a project in which Japanese artist Aoi Suwa is indirectly linking together various pieces and exhibits that she has produced over the years. As part of the project, Suwa will stage a live installation at RWTH Aachen University’s Käte Hamburger Kolleg: Cultures of Research (c:o/re) and engage in a conversation with c:o/re Senior Fellow Masahiko Hara, whose research is focused on the integration of art strategies in science and technology based on the emergent functions of autonomous systems that exhibit fluctuant behavior.

In February, Suwa will be using components of the same installation to present an exhibition in Tokyo, which she will be setting up publicly through an “open install” event. This project emerged out of the concept of “shiki-iki” (識閾, lit. “threshold of consciousness”), which also informed Shiki-iki (Border, 2011), the first installation that Suwa formally presented to begin her career. Composed of a tank of water partitioned with a piece of clear plastic, the work was activated when the viewer poured ink into the water, producing a dynamic effusion of color that gradually revealed the presence of the initially imperceptible boundary. Suwa has since continued to employ such experimental techniques to create works focused on phenomena that can only be witnessed in situ, developing what could be described as an approach aimed at perceiving thresholds that emerge through the process of traversing back and forth between the realms of the perceivable/imperceivable and conscious/unconscious.

Suwa’s approach can be likened to the way one might attempt to gradually visualize the orbit of a celestial body as it makes its periodic passes or a drawing as it takes shape through the iterative actions of marking and erasing. Through this project, she aims to explore its potential as a way of giving expression to the complexity of our current age, which eludes description in terms of simplistic binaries.

「まだ見ぬ識閾 ― Unfelt Threshold」は、アーティストの諏訪葵がこれまでに制作してきたさまざまな作品や現象を「見ること」を通して間接的に結び付ける、実験であり、展示であり、作品でもあり得るようなアートプロジェクトです。

プロジェクトの一環として、アーヘン工科大学のKate Hamburger Kolleg: Cultures of Research (c:o/re)でライブインスタレーションを行いながら、c:o/reシニアフェローの原正彦氏と対談し、YouTubeを通したオンライン配信を1月30日の日本時間20:00から行います。本企画のサブタイトルとなっている「揺律創発／Fluctonomous Emergence」とは、「曖昧な揺らぎや揺動から、自律した機能や知性が発現する」概念を表しています。ライブインスタレーションを起点とした対話を行い、「場」を作ることで見えてくるモノやコトについてサイエンスとアートの両面から探ります。

また、2月に同じインスタレーション作品の部材を再構成し、個展を東京で開催します。初日はオープンインストール（公開搬入）を行うことで、だんだんと出来上がる状況自体を実験／展示／作品の一部として公開します。

このプロジェクトは、諏訪によって発表された最初のインスタレーションである「識閾」（Border、2011）のコンセプトを改めて取り扱うことが起点となりました。この作品は透明なプラスチックで仕切られた水槽の中に、鑑賞者が赤か青かインクを選んで注ぐというシンプルなインスタレーションです。鑑賞者がインクを注ぐと、ダイナミックな色の滲みを生み出し、最初は見えなかった境界の存在が徐々に浮かび上がります。諏訪はこのような実験的な手法を用いて、その場でしか見られない現象に焦点を当てた作品を制作し、現れては消えていく自然現象と人間の知覚する世界の行き来する過程で現れる、「ある動きの中にある境界」を知覚するアプローチを展開してきました。「見える世界」と「見えない世界」、「意識」と「無意識」の間を行き来するような試みは、何度か行き来を目撃することでその輪郭を表す星の軌道のような、描いては消して仕上げる絵を描く構造のようなだんだん浮かび上がらせるというアプローチであり、この一連のアプローチを単純なバイナリーで言い表すことが難しい現代を表現するためのひとつのアイデアとして示すことを目的としています。
